Minutes of monthly meeting of NHRDN on 8th August, 6.30 p.m.

The evening started with a talk by guest speaker, Prof. Emeritus B. B.
Mohanty. In a teaching career which spans more than thirty years in Utkal
University, Prof. Mohanty has taught scores of students who have already
made a mark in their careers. Her dynamism includes her work stint as
Director of School of Women Studies. She is one of the long term and
cherished associates of National HRD Network, Bhubaneswar Chapter. She
reminisced and shared her experiences which kept all mesmerized. Dr. S. K.
Mahapatra, President, NHRDN, Bhubaneswar Chapter presented Prof. B. B.
Mohanty with a citation, as a recognition of her contribution as a teacher.
This was read out by Ms. Bobby Pattnaik (who had prepared the same) for all
to hear. Prof. Mohanty was presented a memento by Isa Mishra.

Also the team celebrated Bobby's birthday and Bobby had nice pleasant
surprise for her when she stepped in to the meeting room.

As per practice, the talk was followed by the meeting of NHRDN, Bhubaneswar
Chapter. The meeting started with status of all matters discussed in the
previous meeting dated 18th July, 2009.

  1. I am posting below the comments of Mr Murthy, our new member at the Saturday conclave!

the distilled wisdom of some one who has spent 30+ years in the teaching....like prof. emeritus bb mohanty was worth learning to. some of the take home points (at least for me) from the brief talk by prof. mohanty were :

the importance of listening in communications. sadly communication is taken as good talking. she cautioned us to this usual pitfall where the urge to talk dominates the listening part and we end up in not paying attention to what is said by the other person.
another beautiful thing she shared was our fear to confront some situations. most of the times, we hold ourselves back, than to face the situations...especially what we consider unpleasant. (after her talk i was brooding over this word confront..why we are scared abt this word when it is mostly meant be face to face with). she was narrating how in her initial years, she was struggling to avoid confrontation with the people for fear of rejection / hurting others. i think it is a powerful message. it doesnt mean that we start fighting with others for each and every thing. but perhaps we need to be bold enough to stand firm and be face to face with the things.
mrs. mohanty was also referring to our urge to advise / guide others even when it was not asked for. i think there is a point in what she says. we must think about this rather deeper.
anyhow, isa would be sending us the minutes of the meeting. but meanwhile, i thought of sharing my takehome points with other friends who couldnt be there. (some thing to do with the point no.3 above or no.1 ???)

(there was also a general discussion among us about coping with the retirement. i was just thinking about it.

how about replacing the word coping with welcoming). and see the difference it makes to our thinking. just food for thought.

we celebrated bobby patnaik's birthday after the meeting.

it was my first meeting of nhrd in bhubaneswar.

it was so nice and i thank all particularly sarojji, acharyaji, isa and ellora.

see you all in the next meeting.
    till then bye...
